Why will printed t-shirts benefit your business?

Printed t-shirts are the ultimate promotional item and are great for expanding brand exposure! Using custom branded t-shirts is a great way to market your company.

Printed t-shirts are the quickest, easiest and most cost-effective way to gain maximum brand exposure.

Here’s why printed t-shirts will benefit you:

- Custom branded t-shirts provide expansive marketing
- You can reach a large, diverse audience with this simple item of clothing
- T-shirts give you the best value for money! This is the most cost-effective way to achieve super effective results
- Branded printed t-shirts act as a great method for marketing in the long term!
- Custom t-shirts can be used continuously in lots of different contexts. This will give you the easiest way to achieve your marketing goals!
- T-shirts don’t go out of fashion. So they’ll provide effective marketing for your brand for years and years after you’ve made and distributed them!

Why are branded t-shirts a smart marketing choice?

And of course, everybody uses them! And we mean everybody. Whether you’re a man or a woman, old or young, big or small, t-shirts are a wardrobe essential. Can’t live without ‘em!

T-shirts are a go-to for just about any occasion:

- A casual day out
- Sporting events
- Running errands
- A balmy evening dinner
- Or even a snuggly sleep with DJ Duvet!

Other than, perhaps, a black-tie affair, t-shirts are appropriate for anything you do. And to be perfectly frank, I bet even James Bond dons a tight, white T (try saying that quickly three times!) under his tux.

There really is no limit to what they can be used for.

And let’s be honest, there’s something oddly satisfying about being given a promotional t-shirt at an event.

Whether you wear it out on weekends or use it as a snuggly sleeping shirt, there’s no doubt that t-shirt is heading home with you.

And the best thing about printed t-shirts?

Everybody who wears one becomes a walking billboard for your brand! What better way to increase brand exposure than to attach yourself to a walking and talking advertisement?

Why do t-shirts make great promotional items?

The possibilities are endless, but here are just a few reasons:

- Everybody wears them
- Loads of design and branding options
- Inexpensive
- Super effective marketing and brand exposure
- Can give them away anywhere and any time
- Easy to distribute
- Can encourage a sense of belonging to the advertised brand
- Everybody looks good in them
- Those who wear them become a walking billboard
- Can be used for anything
- Last forever - I mean, who throws away a t-shirt?
- Can promote team-building

Even 20-year-old t-shirts that have been through the worst and no longer look so hot continue to be used. We’ll use them to run, gym, sleep or paint in. The beauty of a good t-shirt is that the more you wear it, the comfier it gets. It really is the gift that keeps on giving!

In fact, the Advertising Speciality Institute’s (ASI) 2019 research conducted in the United States showed that out of all the different possible promotional items people owned, t-shirts were one that people tended to keep the longest.

If you apply this research to the South African context, one can only assume that people will keep t-shirts for even longer than in the US! Why? Well, due to South Africa’s position in the world, our people find more value in these kinds of promotional items. This makes the use of t-shirts in marketing even more effective!

Of course, t-shirts allow their wearers to become walking billboards. The objective of using promotional products in marketing is obviously to create impressions upon people. With that in mind, it’s interesting to note that the ASI found that t-shirts were especially effective in doing this. In fact, t-shirts ranked in the top three with regards to the number of impressions created by different promotional products.

So we’re not just saying that t-shirts are great for marketing. The research backs us up! It’s true, t-shirts are the ultimate promotional item.

There are loads of other reasons why giving customers printed t-shirts can be great marketing:

- Giving customers branded t-shirts shows that you care about them
- The use of custom branded t-shirts demonstrates your confidence in your own brand
- Giving away promotional t-shirts is a cost-effective way to make a meaningful gesture

There are also many different ways in which you can give out promotional t-shirts:

- Give away t-shirts at events or conferences to promote your brand
- As an added extra when customers order a product
- Gift them to clients as a token of your appreciation for their continued support
- Surprise new customers and clients with promotional t-shirts

The possibilities are endless!

South Africans live, eat and breathe sport. It’s in our blood. No matter the sport – whether it’s rugby, cricket, netball, football, hockey, surfing, cycling, running, paddling swimming, sailing or rowing – you can be sure that we’ll be watching it.

In a country like ours, sport is not only a fun pass-time,but it has become a powerful tool in uniting South African people.

Who could forget the Springboks’ glorious and momentous win at the 1995 Rugby World cup? Images of Francois Pienaar and Nelson Mandela lifting the Webb Ellis cup are etched in the memories of all South Africans, regardless of whether they watched it live or years later.

While the team and spectators celebrated their victory in the stadium, the nation exploded in jubilation, celebrating the country’s win and its incredible significance in South African history.

Undoubtedly, sport is important to us. So what better occasion to use branded t-shirts?

Think about how many South Africans wore their Bafana Bafana t-shirts in 2010! What about all the people who wore Springbok jerseys on Fridays during the Rugby World Cup in 2019?

There was no question as to who they were supporting!

Custom t-shirts are just as effective for smaller clubs and teams to support each other on the sidelines or at events:

- Branded t-shirts promote team building
- Demonstrate spectator support
- Advertise your team/club

As a sportsman or woman, there’s nothing better than looking into the spectator stands and seeing waves of people donning your team's colours!

South Africa also has a significant club scene for a range of different sports. For instance, there are loads of competitive hockey, cricket and lifesaving clubs all over the country.

All these clubs host events and derby days for which custom t-shirts are an absolute must-have. These events also provide a great opportunity to give away promotional branded t-shirts. Who knows, maybe you’ll see an agile sportsman or woman zipping around the field in your t-shirt!

As a leading t-shirt printing business in South Africa, Brand Innovation can offer you exactly what you need.

Branded t-shirts for conferences

Branded t-shirts for marketing at conferences are a really effective way of promoting your company. With so many businessmen and women in one place, what better way to stand out from the crowd (literally) than to make sure everyone’s wearing or carrying your branded t-shirts

Why are branded t-shirts an effective marketing tool at conferences?

- T-shirts effectively advertise your brand to a targeted audience
- Eye-catching t-shirts will help you stand out from your competitors
- Branded t-shirts' consistent advertising will keep your company’s name on everybody’s minds all day!
- When people think of the event, they’ll think of the t-shirt they got. They’ll think of your brand!

If you’re working in the hustle and bustle of the corporate world, these are definitely the people you want to market to.

Custom t-shirts for political campaigns

30-odd years into South Africa’s democracy, politics and national feeling are incredibly important in the day-to-day lives of all South Africans.

We all have our opinions on the current state of affairs. It’s natural, it’s healthy and it should be encouraged! We want you to care and we want you to vote to make your voice heard, whatever your political preferences may be.

Do you have something you really believe in? Are you running a political campaign? Well, there are loads of different possibilities for election promotional items. Custom t-shirts provide a favourite: they a powerful and effective way to spread your message and ensure that your voice is heard!

Why are custom t-shirts great for marketing your party or organisation?

- Custom branded t-shirts are eye-catching – nobody will miss your party’s name and slogan!
- Political t-shirts spark conversations – everyone will be talking about your party
- Recipients will see your party’s name every time they open their cupboard
- Branded t-shirts are memorable – we all know who’s associated with yellow, blue and red!
- People assume that those wearing your party’s t-shirt support your cause

Immediately South Africans will think of the many striking campaigning t-shirts that we may see day-to-day. Who doesn’t know those bright yellow, powder blue and striking red walking advertisements? Of course you do!

In addition to mainstream political campaigns, marketing t-shirts can be a compelling tool by which to draw attention to other political and social issues. This may be to wear at protests, rallies or just every day. In a way, t-shirts allow for a form of every day protesting.

For instance, South African women have joined global movements against gender-based violence in saying #metoo and #enoughisenough. A powerful demonstration of this sentiment was the wearing of black during protests and everyday life in South Africa.

This was an excellent, persuasive and powerful way for women to make their voices heard. The wearing of black t-shirts with simple, punchy and hard-hitting slogans sent a strong message to the rest of the world.

So whether you represent a political party, a social movement or any another important organisation, custom t-shirts are a powerful marketing tool and a great way to make your voice heard.

T-shirts for staff uniform

You want your staff to look smart and polished when they represent your brand. Of course, you also want them to feel proud to represent your company!

That’s why having the perfect custom t-shirt for your company is essential in achieving these goals. And here’s why t-shirts are great for staff uniforms:

A promotional marketing product to give away to employees or clients

The use of promotional t-shirts as gifts to customers, clients and employees is becoming an increasingly popular marketing tool. It has become incredibly effective for companies to design funky and unique t-shirts that bear their brand name and use them as gifts.

These are often high-quality t-shirts with designs that include more than just the brand’s logo. For instance, the custom t-shirt may have a cute drawing on the front that is aesthetically pleasing and adheres to the laws of high fashion, while still donning your company logo clearly and visibly.

This approach may encourage more people to wear your t-shirts more often and to different kinds of places.

In addition, their quirky designs are sure to stand out in a crowd and be memorable.

Of course, there are other important reasons why you may give your employees specifically branded t-shirts that aren’t necessarily uniform:

- Printed company t-shirts will emphasise pride in your brand
- Your employees’ wearing the t-shirts will increases brand exposure
- Providing employees with branded t-shirts promotes team-building

Special work events or team-building exercises

Regardless of what kind of business you are, work events are a reasonably regular occurrence. Whether it may be an end-of-year function or a day of team-building at the park, custom, branded t-shirts can be a great addition to your day.

A great pop-culture example of an effective use of t-shirts for special work events is that great episode of The Office during which the entire company gathers to participate in a day of fun, team-building activities.

While the gang gets up to all kinds of hilarious mischief, something that really stands out is the fact that the employees from each branch of Dunder Mifflin were given different coloured company t-shirts to wear for the day.

This encouraged:

- Team-building
- A sense of belonging
- A feeling of pride

Now, The Office isn’t real life (as much as we may wish it were), but this is an excellent example of an awesome use of branded t-shirts for staff. They were bright, effective and memorable. There’s no reason why your company can’t be just as effective!

Branded t-shirts for expos

Do you want your brand to stand out from the crowd when you’re exhibiting your company at industry expos?

Expos are highly competitive, and if you want to stand out, you’ll need to go the extra mile.

That’s why the use of printed t-shirts is the way to go.

There are lots of super-effective ways to use custom printed t-shirts at expos, here are the top two that we would recommend:

1. Dress your staff in your printed t-shirts

- Your staff will look neat and professional in a crowd full of people
- Printed t-shirts will attract people to wander over to your stand rather than the guy next door
- Potential clients will know exactly who to speak to when they see your stand.

When people are spending hours wandering around looking at hundreds of stands, you want to be the one they remember.

2. Give promotional printed t-shirts to potential clients

Being successful at expos all hinges on standing out from the crowd. So when somebody visits your stand and expresses interest in your company, why not go the extra mile and gift them a promotional t-shirt that advertises your brand right up front and centre?

This is a great way to increase brand exposure at an expo and make potential clients happy at the same time. We can guarantee that the company they’ll remember from the expo will be the one who gave them a cool, printed t-shirt!

Branding your t-shirts

Printed t-shirts are one of the most effective marketing tools, so it’s essential that we make sure everything is just right. At Brand Innovation, we’re committed to finding you the best branding options to meet your needs!

There are lots of different aspects to branding your t-shirts and several choices that need to be made, so we’re going to make it easy for you.

What are the different types of t-shirting printing available to you?

For printed t-shirts, we can offer you three choices:

- Screen printing for printed t-shirts
- Digital transfer printing for branded t-shirts
- Embroidery for branded t-shirts

From our experience (and we have a lot of it) we would recommend screen printing or digital printing for branded t-shirts. But here’s some more information on each method to help you make the right decision to meet your needs.

Screen printing for branded t-shirts

Why is screen printing great for your branded t-shirts?

- Most cost-effective method of printing
- Super effective for bold and striking branding
- Allows for the use of single or multi-colour branding of up to six colours.
- The price of branding is affected by the number of colours you use, not the size of the branding.
- Your artwork can be printed as an A4, A5 or A6.

How does the screen printing process work?

1. Your branding artwork is put onto a mesh screen and the blank areas are coated with an airtight substance.
2. A squeegee is used to push the ink through the screen onto the areas where your artwork has been imposed.
3. Multiple layers are made by means of different screens. Each layer is printed one by one to create your custom design.

Digital transfer printing for branded t-shirts

Digital transfer printing means that we use digital images provided by you and replicate them on your t-shirts.

Why is digital transfer printing a great option for branded t-shirts

- Offers great printing quality and is long-lasting
- Provides a photorealistic look
- Digital transfer printing allows for the use of blending and tone within your branding
- Great for more intricately designed branding with complex colour combinations
- Important to note: We need you to send us your branding in at least 300dpi image resolution so that we can ensure the highest possible quality of your garments.

How does the process of digital transfer printing work?

1. We print your branding artwork on special transfer paper
2. We coat the paper with a special glue and use UV rays cure the glue onto the ink
3. The paper is put onto the t-shirt and they both go into a heat press

And voila! Your beautiful custom t-shirt is ready to rock n’ roll!

Embroidery for branded t-shirts

As we said, we don’t normally recommend embroidery for branded t-shirts. There’s nothing wrong with embroidery as a branding option per se, but when it comes to shirts, it can cause a few issues. And we want you to know exactly what to expect.

Most importantly, embroidery is heavy which weighs down the t-shirt and may cause the fabric to skew. This is especially relevant when it comes to t-shirts with lower grammage.

Important to note: On t-shirts, embroidery shows through the fabric

Why is embroidery often used for branding?

- Embroidery provides a high-quality look for your branding
- You have the option of single or multi-coloured branding as well as tone-on-tone embroidery

So how does the embroidery process work on t-shirts?

1. Your artwork is put into the embroidery machine
2. Specialised computers read the file and your branding is stitched onto the fabric

What are the different branding areas on t-shirts?

For t-shirts, we offer three different branding areas: the front, back and both sleeves.

Why these options?

We want your branding to look amazing, and we know that branding prints well on the above flat areas. We do not offer branding on the sides of t-shirts because the seams tend to cause trouble and the artwork just doesn’t look as good as it could. And we want your branding to look as good as possible!

Another cool option is full-colour sublimation.

This allows you to print your entire t-shirt in full colour! The ink is embedded into the fabric of your t-shirt, allowing it to feel as if it’s part of the fabric. This is a cool option for a super funky t-shirt, especially if you’re trying to create something eye-catching and bold!

Something to bear in mind:

Depending on the colour of your branding and t-shirt, we may need to double print your artwork. This is particularly relevant with darker coloured t-shirts. Why do we do this? We want to ensure that your branded t-shirt looks as good as possible, so it's essential that your branding is printed clearly. So keep this in mind when choosing colours!

So now that you have all the information you need on different types of branding, let’s have a look at international tolerances for clothing!

International tolerances for clothing

What are international tolerances for clothing? And what does this mean for you when ordering t-shirts?

If you’re ordering a large number of t-shirts, or you’re ordering a second batch of the same t-shirts a while after the first order, it is possible that your t-shirts may differ ever-so-slightly in size and shade.

There are a few reasons for this, and the Advertising Speciality Institute provides us with a whole lot of information on international tolerances for clothing. We want you to understand exactly why and how this happens.

First, let’s talk about specs.

All garments come with spec sheets. This tells you all about the technical construction details of an item and comes with a technical diagram of it showing measurements. All of the measurements that we provide come directly from these spec sheets.

When t-shirts are being produced, especially on a large scale, it is possible that even though you may have ordered 500 of the exact same item, they may differ ever-so-slightly from the specs. This is a natural part of the production process.

What is the industry norm for differences between specs and the finished product?

The industry norm is a tolerance of 2cm. This means that your t-shirt may be 2cm smaller or 2cm bigger than the measurements specified in the specs. For example, if the half-chest spec is 50cm, it would be acceptable for the finished product to have half-chest measurements of 48cm or 52cm.

There are a few reasons why products may end up being a slightly different size to what is in the specs.

- During production, many layers of fabric are laid out on top of each other. Sometimes the fabric can move slightly while the t-shirts are being cut, causing slight differentiations.
- While the t-shirts are being sewn, it’s possible that the material may shift a little or the seamstress may need to use a little more seam allowance.

Of course, this doesn't mean that you'll receive an entirely different size to what you ordered! There just may be a teeny-tiny 2cm difference on either side.

Shade tolerances

Just like with sizing, it is very possible that the shade of the t-shirts you order may be slightly different to what you’ve selected.
This can be influenced a few significant factors:

- The water in the area
- Time of year
- Temperature
- Type of fabric

In addition, the same products are often produced in different factories. Even though we do everything in our power to ensure that shading is consistent, it is possible that every now and then you may find slight variations.

What is the industry norm for shading tolerance?

Internationally, one shade on either side of the specified shade falls within the shading tolerance.

So this definitely doesn't mean you're going to receive a completely different colour to what you ordered, it just may be ever-so-slightly lighter or darker. But only within in shade!

Sizing your t-shirts

Making sure you choose the right sizes is a super important part of ordering printed t-shirts for your company! We’re here to help you make sure you make the right decisions.

In and out of ratio when ordering t-shirts

So what does in and out of ratio mean when you’re ordering t-shirts? Well, this is a great question and it’s a really important aspect of placing an order.

Basically, it’s all about knowing how many of each size you should be ordering. And no, this is definitely not something you want to guess!

To make the process easier for you, we’ve put together a quick guide to understanding in and out of ratio using all of our industry knowledge (courtesy of the Advertising Speciality Institute) to ensure that you’re in the loop!

Have a look at our guidelines on in and out of ratio when ordering clothing to get all the info you need.

Advice on different t-shirt sizes

We’re often asked how our t-shirt sizes compare to instore sizes, and we totally get it. We all know what it’s like to wear different sizes at all your favourite stores. It’s confusing and it’s downright inconvenient. So we’re going to make things easier for you.

It all depends on what the t-shirt is for. The t-shirts we offer are true to size, especially if you’re ordering men’s and ladies’ t-shirts separately.

If you’re ordering t-shirts for both men and women, you may choose a unisex t-shirt. This means the t-shirts will fit more loosely on most people, rather than being figure-hugging.

Another useful tip is that often women who wear larger sizes find that the ladies’ t-shirts are not quite long enough. We want everybody to be comfortable. So in this case, we’d recommend perhaps ordering men’s t-shirts so that you can be sure the length will be adequate and comfortable.

Of course, the best way to be sure about sizes is to simply order samples. We do charge for these sample items as well as a small fee to cover the courier costs, but this is the best way to absolutely be happy that you know what you’re ordering!

Steps when ordering branded t-shirts

It’s as easy as 1, 2, 3!

2. Send us your vector artwork and we will do artwork of your t-shirt design. We will also need the different pantone colours that you want for your artwork. Once payment is made and you approve the design we will start printing.

Your images can be in several different formats and still be considered Vector.

What are the easiest formats for me to use?

- PDF: this is probably the easiest format for most people to use!
- Adobe Illustrator (ai.): this is also a good option if you don't have access to more complex programmes

Other formats that are also Vector:

- Corel Draw (.cdr)
- Freehand (.fh)

Note: It is possible for both Vector and non-Vector artwork to be stored in any of the above formats, which can make things a little confusing. But there's an easy way to check whether or not they are Vector after all.

It's simple!

1. Zoom in to the image
2. If the edges are pixelated then your image isn't Vector and you'll need to change it.
3. If you are able to click on the picture and a blue box pops up around it, this is a good sign! That means your artwork is Vector and you're ready to go.

Is there a minimum order for printed t-shirts?

The short answer: yes, we require a minimum order of 10 t-shirts.

We normally produce printed t-shirts in bulk, so our standard orders are generally a minimum of 20.

So while you can order as few as 10 t-shirts, the more you order the more cost-effective it's going to be for you.

Let's get started!

Now that you know everything there is to know about printed t-shirts, let's get cracking!
